Bright & Early: Tourist Appreciation Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Metro Council is showing tourists anything but love this week as they consider jacking up taxes even higher than they already are. The increase would come by way of a 50-cent hike in the hotel/motel tax, which they see as a way to bring in more revenue without bothering the locals. Trouble is, we already hold the record for being the second highest tourist-taxing town and some are worried that it’ll scare off the tourists. We’re thinking it would take way more than 50 cents per night to do that, but who are we to say?

  • A bug’s life. An elderly woman went to battle with a cockroach last night and lost, nearly burning her house to the ground in the process when she accidentally sprayed the bug-killing spray into an electrical outlet. Despite the fact that she’s 92, she made it out safely and her house wasn’t damaged too badly. No word on what happened to the cockroach.
  • Viral. Speaking of killing bugs, Metro will be spraying for mosquitoes today in Antioch due to several tests showing that some of them are carrying West Nile. A human case was also confirmed in Hermitage last week. They’ll start spraying around 8 tonight and continue for a few hours, so try to stay indoors if you’re in the area.
  • Bits & pieces. Congratulations to the Music City Star, which actually made it through the weekend without incident … The 12 South Taproom is safe for now, as long as developers keep dragging their feet on neighborhood revitalization efforts … Cumberland County may finally be getting its act together and starting school up again soon … If you missed the game on Friday, you missed a spectacular finish.
