Happy Hour: From Ear To Ear Edition
- We’re way happy to say that little Brittney Simpson, the 12-year old who was shot in the head last month by her 11-year old friend, started school with the rest of the kids today at LaVergne Middle School. What a champ. [WKRN]
- The Nashville cabbies were at it again, once again holding a protest outside of the Metro Courthouse this morning. Actually they called in sick and then they held the protest. Hopefully no one needed a cab today. [WTVF]
- Pacman can’t seem to get rid of his Franklin mansion to save his life. Though he originally bought it for $1.5M, the highest bid is now at $1.1. And apparently George Jones is eying the property, too. [WKRN]
- The Tennessean tells a weird tale about how Isaac Hayes and TN Speaker of the House Jimmy Naifeh bonded over Naifeh’s annual “Coon Supper.” ….We can’t make this stuff up. [Tennessean]

Nashvillest Guide To Unloading Your Old Crap

We make no secret of our love for all things Craigslist. It may surprise you to know that we actually use it from time to time for something other than hunting down all the bad haiku and personal ads in town. We actually use Craigslist quite frequently for buying and selling furniture, concert tickets (no scalping, of course), airline credits, bikes and more. And lately we’ve learned that Craigslist isn’t actually our only option when it comes to scoring a great deal on other people’s used junk – and we want to pass on the love. Try these other sites the next time you’re buying/selling something.
Kijiji: Have fun saying that ten times fast. Kijiji is almost exactly like Craigslist, but without as much spam (it’s only a matter of time). It’s also slightly easier to use, although we don’t really find Craigslist to be all that challenging. The categories are more intuitive, particularly in the “Jobs” section.
Freecycle: The Nashville Freecycle has over 8800 members giving (and taking) free stuff. That’s a lot of free stuff. As you might expect by the name Freecycle, everything is free. You can find a lot of good items from people who would rather give their things away than go through the hassle of posting it for sale. It’s a Yahoo group, which is kind of annoying and inconvenient to join, but it’s worth the effort. We don’t recommend opting for email notification on every new post – the daily digest does fine.
The JobJar: You may have seen signs for The Job Jar around town – that’s how we found out about it. True to its name, this site focuses mostly on odd-job postings, but there is a (currently empty) marketplace section as well. Perfect for freelancers and odd-jobbers, or anyone looking to pick up some extra money by working on the weekends. Don’t let the scarcity of content fool you – The Job Jar is just getting back on its’ feet after a little hiatus. Help them out by posting your job needs! They’re solely focused on Middle Tennessee, so you won’t spend hours sorting through the spam like you would on national sites.
Facebook Marketplace: So easy and so effective. The nice thing about Facebook Marketplace is that you can target the networks you want to reach – In our case, Nashville, TN. You can also target college or employer networks (if you’re in them). Facebook Marketplace brings those window shoppers right to your ad, and has the added bonus of making sure you’re buying from a real person. You can see if you have any mutual friends, which puts our minds at ease when venturing out to meet a stranger after work.
We left out all of the newspapers’ classified sections for brevity’s sake. Many of the local papers do offer free online classifieds, so remember those as needed. If you know of any others we’ve missed, let us know in the comments and we’ll update our running list.

Photo Of The Day: August 11, 2008
With so many great photos from this weekends Tomato Art Festival in East Nashville, we had a really tough time picking the our favorite. We could resist the big brown puppy eyes on this shot by gravyboats, though, and we thought did a great job of capturing all the red tomato-y fun from the day. Be sure to share your own favorite shots from the weekend in the Nashvillest Flickr pool!
Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Adventures In Kentucky: Dinosaur World [Field Trips]

Gas prices these days have put a damper on our out-of-state jaunts, but we finally came up with a solution. Nashvillest field trip to Kentucky!
Hop on 65-N and drive for about an hour, and you’ll end up at the Kentucky border. Our first stop over the border was the Kentucky Visitor’s Center, where we hoped to score some coupons for the many glamourous attractions that are just miles away. No luck. Frustrated at the amount of money we’re about to spend, but determined to see all that just-over-the-border-Kentucky had to offer, we pressed on. Our first destination is Dinosaur World.

Now, the brochure for Dinosaur World (or Dino World, as we will affectionately call it) states that it is “just an hour from Nashville and Louisville.” This is not entirely true. The Kentucky border is an hour from Nashville. Fifteen minutes past the border is Bowling Green, KY. 45 miles past Bowling Green is Cave City, where Dino World is located. And you can’t miss it. If you do miss it, you will be notified by a giant billboard and dinosaur that state “You just missed us.” It’s idiot-proof.

Bright & Early: School Daze Edition
Good morning, Nashville. We hope you had as much fun as we did fun dodging school zones this morning on your way to work. Even though Metro Schools are back in session today, the kids in Cumberland County might be getting a few more days of summer. Or not. Truthfully, nobody knows. The school system recently found itself in a $5M hole and doesn’t have the money to start school yet, so the start date is still uncertain.
- Nevermore, nevermore, nevermore. If you hear some explosions tonight, fear not. It’s just NES blasting some birds out of their central substation with a cannon–a sound cannon, that is. Apparently bird poop can wreak some serious havoc on the machinery.
- Nebraska is trying to kill us all. Whole foods is recalling some of their ground beef sold between June 2nd and August 6th for possible E. Coli contamination. We’re listed as one of the states where it could have ended up, so if you think you have some, you may want to toss it.
- Bits & pieces. The Titans are off to a fabulous start, powering past the Rams 34-13 in Saturday’s preseason opener … Singer Isaac Hayes passed away in his Memphis home over the weekend … NAACP’s Nashville chapter celebrated its 100th birthday in Centennial Park … A Tennessee farmer is packing away seeds for when the world runs out of food.
