Bright & Early: Fearmongering Edition

Good morning, Nashville. The election for Williamson County Sheriff took a nasty turn this week when candidate Tommy Campsey started hanging campaign posters around town that many say were racially charged. “Like a thief in the night, illegal immigrants sneak into our communities and live among us in violation of the law,” reads the poster. “As your sheriff, I will enforce the law and take a stand against illegals in Williamson County.” Hispanic residents have taken offense to the poster, saying that the it unfairly targets them. Campsey doesn’t see the problem.

  • Taxi strike. At least 100 Nashville Allied Cab drivers–about 1/5 of the city’s taxi fleet–went on strike yesterday, complaining that $2 per hour isn’t sufficient pay. They also fork over a weekly fee to Allied Cab regardless of how much money they’ve made off of picking up passengers.
  • Remember the Titans. It’s been a rough start for the Titans, who started their training camp last week. As of yesterday, three players were down for the count, including kickers Josh Miller and Rob Bironas and defensive lineman Ulrich Winkler. As far as anyone can tell, Miller and Bironas should be back within the week, but Ulrich’s knee injury may be more worrisome.
  • Bits & pieces. Kentucky is good for something! Cheap gas … Laura Bush paid us a visit yesterday to talk about the Reading First component of No Child Left Behind … A Brentwood investor buys out a Food Lion shopping center on Nolensville Road … Tuesday morning shocker–The Sounds lost!

Seriously? People are driving to Kentucky to "save money"...??

    (i.e. using gasoline)

Or maybe they are storing cans of it in their yard like even bigger idiots.

    I especially like the quote..
"We drive a long way just to save a dollar."

    Its like the Onion.
  • @sarah: I totally agree. Especially with gas prices coming down, I doubt there's any station in Kentucky with a low enough price to justify the jaunt. Maybe if you're right by the border or something, but it's still doubtful.
  • I always seem to remember gas being more expensive in KY than TN.. I always find cheap gas in Lebanon and at the BP in Murf at I24...
