Bright & Early: Mr. Dean Goes To Washington Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Mayor Karl Dean is taking a trip to Washington DC to discuss the benefits of the Alternative High Schools Initiative, which seems to be just about the only good thing going on with the Metro Schools these days. The program allows a lot of flexibility within schools, providing 12 different educational models that can be mixed and matched to fit the needs of schools that are struggling with the traditional model. Over the next year, Metro will be taking a look at how to make that work for the city.

  • Short notice. The American Cancer Society’s Fight Back Express bus is at Centennial Park as we speak. They’ll be there until 10 this morning letting folks share their stories with some unnamed members of Congress about struggling with cancer. If you’re in the neighborhood, be sure to stop by!
  • Need help? Today is the last day to apply for help with your bills through the Metro Action Committee, so if you’re in need, head out to the Susan Gray Head Start Center or the main downtown location. Given the demand this year, though, it may take you a while.
  • Bits & pieces. Police arrested one of the three people who were dressing up as cops and robbing people around town, still looking for the other two … Foreclosure rates have shot up 50% since last June … We may be in for more rain and storms today … The Sounds beat the Omaha Royals 6-4, continuing their streak of Awesome … A methadone treatment clinic was busted for throwing out sensitive patient information instead of destroying it.

Correction: Though the Susan Gray Head Start Center won’t be accepting applications after today for bill assistance, you can still apply at the downtown center. (Thanks to Kleinheider for the correction!)
