Bright & Early: Good Ideas Gone Bad Edition

Good morning, Nashville. We’ve been seeing headline after headline about the Music City Star’s many failures over the past couple of weeks and an unfortunately mix-up this weekend that left hundreds of angry passengers stranded didn’t do much to boost our faith in it. They had the great idea to run a fireworks express train from Lebanon and Hermitage into downtown for the Fourth, except they didn’t anticipate the thousands of people who would turn out. The train was so packed when it left Lebanon that it didn’t even bother to stop in Hermitage, leaving hundreds of ticket holders scratching their heads and demanding refunds. Unfortunately, they’ll have to come downtown if they want their money back.

  • Heartwarming story of the morning. A Vandy grad from Kenya whose village had sold their cows and chickens to buy him his plane ticket to America was finally able to pay them back by building a medical clinic in his hometown. He says they’re still having trouble raising the money they need, but it’s a start.
  • Then the letdown. Nashville’s homeless numbers are up 10% with the economic downturn, and the number of homeless women and children is up even higher at 32%. Area shelters are feeling the burn, and the Nashville Rescue Mission had nearly 3,000 turn out for their July 4th barbecue.
  • Bits & pieces. A Springfield family called and they want their monkey back … Somehow we missed the Tennessee state yo-yo championship at Rocketown this weekend … Ecstasy “makes a comeback” in Clarksville … Tennessean: “In Nashville, kosher shopping can be a competitive sport,” … Nissan’s North American headquarters open this morning.
